Dale had his second visit of the year to Salesian School Chertsey running a series of workshops for students applying for Degree Apprenticeships.

This session focused on How to Smash 👊 Your Interview.

One of the key sections was showing how important part time jobs can be for demonstrating your skills.

William Robbens (seen above chatting with Dale after the session) works part-time in a Japanese restaurant as a waiter, and is aiming for a Business Management Degree Apprenticeship.

Using Amazon Careers’ Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship as our example, we broke down how his part-time job is doing far more than earning him some money. It’s helping him build a portfolio of real interview evidence.

From this role, Will could easily demonstrate the skills Amazon are asking for:

• Communication skills

• Team working

• Organisation and attention to detail

• Problem solving under pressure

• IT and number skills

• Analytical and logical thinking

Suddenly those interview questions that start with “Tell me about a time when…” became so much easier to answer, because the evidence was already there through the part time job.

The key message for students:

👉 You don’t need a fancy job title for your part time job

👉 You do need to recognise, the incredible skills you're developing

👉 And then you need to talk about them!!

Huge credit to Will for engaging so brilliantly, and to Salesian School for continuing to invest in preparing students for super-competitive recruitment processes.
